Washington County board hires Sportsplex director, approves parking study and two at-large appointments

Board members also discussed a two-phase plan to add a new parking area behind two existing fields at the complex. County staff described a property line behind the fields and said the first phase would focus on surfacing and raising the grade behind the nearest field to create space for about 50 to 60 additional cars. “I would say 50 to 60 cars because what’s happening is triple parking, locking everybody in,” a county official said. Staff said the county road department can perform the work and will return with cost estimates for the first phase and the full buildout.
The board filled two at-large positions on the Sportsplex advisory body. The board approved the appointment of Carlos Thompson to an at-large seat and confirmed another at-large placement after discussion; motions carried by voice vote.
Members also noted work to repair hazardous holes in the Sportsplex parking lot and to complete turf installation before the upcoming season. Officials reported roughly 200 program registrations to date, with more expected. Board members asked staff to provide traffic control on nights when the facility is full and to post auxiliary parking directions so vehicles will not block the adjacent road.
Why it matters: The hire and the parking decision are immediate operational actions that affect scheduling, public safety and access for youth and community events at the county’s primary sports facility. The board directed staff to return with costings and a phasing plan for construction.
