Switchpoint asks district to help publicize Circles program for families exiting poverty

Julie Dockett of Switchpoint addressed the board during public comment on Jan. 9 to describe Circles, a national program the nonprofit runs locally to help families move out of poverty by pairing them with volunteer allies and providing family-centered curriculum and supports.
Dockett said Circles holds weekly meetings at the Children’s Museum with a dinner for families before program activities for children and parents. Allies are volunteer mentors from middle- to upper-income households who support families with networks and practical guidance, she said.
"We invite the whole family to the meeting," Dockett said. She asked whether the district could help publicize the program to families using PowerSchool or other district communications so Switchpoint could reach more participants. District staff and board members said they would follow up after the meeting to review policies regarding district communications and handouts and explore ways to assist. Dockett was directed to follow up with district staff (Mike Carr and others) after the meeting.
The board thanked Dockett and directed staff to work with the presenter to determine appropriate outreach steps consistent with district policy.
