Pine View High School outlines cone-site reading intervention to carry students across buildings

Pine View High School representatives presented the board with a cone-site reading intervention program on Jan. 9 designed to coordinate reading supports across feeder elementary and middle schools and the high school.

The presenter said the project grew from meetings last spring with feeder-elementary and middle-school staff and aims to create common vocabulary, common indicators and a shared electronic transition document so students needing extra reading support will carry their interventions with them from building to building. "We wanted to work on common vocabulary, common indicators, shared data, a transitional document that we all can access so that when student A goes from Washington Elementary to Fossil Ridge Intermediate, there is no question as to who the student is and what help they may need," the presenter said.

The school invited Fossil Ridge Intermediate and Pine View Middle School into the meetings and said the group plans to prepare grade-level strategies at a Jan. 16 follow-up meeting and then begin implementation. Presenters said the approach should reduce repeated efforts when students transition between buildings and expected benefits include improved reading levels, better attendance and reduced discipline incidents.

The high school also reported a related extracurricular project linking choir, video production and technical skills; the presenter credited staff professional development and community resources for supporting the work.

The board asked to be kept informed and the presenters said they will return with progress updates.
