The Minooka CCSD 201 Board of Education approved a Minneka Elementary School intercom and speaker replacement project estimated at about $51,000.
Director of Technology Aaron Souza said the existing intercom system is roughly 10 years old and repairs have left the district unable to rely on consistent classroom and exterior announcements. “We wanted to do the whole thing, get this done,” Souza said, describing a single contract to replace classroom speakers, add exterior coverage for car rider lines, bus lanes and playgrounds, and install a new teacher call button system.
Souza said the district originally budgeted about $35,000 for the work but continued discovery of issues raised the vendor quote to about $51,000. He said the project was budgeted in the current fiscal year and staff plan to complete the work during summer to avoid disrupting classes. Souza added the new system will integrate with the district’s existing emergency notification system used at the junior high.
A board member praised the proposed exterior coverage, noting staff outside during drills had not heard earlier announcements, which prompted the project. The board approved the intercom project by roll call; five members voted yes and the motion carried.
The board’s approval allows administration to finalize contracting and schedule installation during summer break. Administration said, if successful, the intercom model may be evaluated for other buildings.
