Yvette Johnson, Student Tuition Recovery Fund chief, told the advisory committee that the STRF unit has posted an online tutorial video and an educational credit request form on the bureau's website and that two newly onboarded staff members are already contributing to claim processing.
"Students are able to fill out the Student Tuition Recovery Fund application online. We now have a link on our website to the video that is a tutorial for the students to watch," Johnson said, thanking advisory committee members who reviewed the video.
Johnson reported 86 STRF claims received in the quarter (70 submitted via Connect and 16 via paper) and 31 claims closed in the quarter. She said staff are working toward a largely paperless process and that 144 claims were at manager-review, 103 actively worked by staff, and 60 awaiting additional student information. Johnson said 51 claims were pending at the State Controller's Office for payment as of Dec. 31.
The unit reported continued work on large-impact closures for which additional documentation is required from third parties or federal agencies; those complex matters (for example, some legacy closures involving federal aid) remain under active adjudication.
Ending: STRF staff said they will continue process improvements, coordinate with OSR for outreach, and return with updates as online systems and staffing increase processing capacity.
