Board members and representatives of PEAK discussed options for acquiring the work during the meeting, including issuing a call for art, commissioning a piece, or buying an existing work. Nan Sauer, identified in the meeting as the PEAT board representative, said PEAK’s board prefers buying a preexisting regional piece in the roughly $10,000 range so the artwork could be in place in time for events around Earth Day on April 22.
Chelsea Ashcraft, the county staff liaison, described the required steps for bringing a purchase to County Council, saying staff would prepare a report asking council to approve spending up to the requested amounts and to allow time for public input. Board members identified possible locations near PEAK’s main entrance garden where a medium-sized work could be sited so it would be visible to visitors. Speakers mentioned several artists and example pieces under consideration, including work by Kevin Box and other regional artists; the board did not select a specific artist at the meeting.
Board members agreed on a process: the PEAK–board working group will propose a short list of candidate works (three or so), the Art and Public Places Board will review those candidates at its March meeting, and staff will prepare the council report for a timely decision. Several members flagged installation logistics and maintenance as items that could affect timing and total cost, and staff said they would check with county maintenance and facilities about installation requirements.
The motion presented to the board asked County Council to authorize purchase of a PEAK art piece not to exceed $10,000, with an additional not-to-exceed $5,000 for installation and maintenance. The motion carried on a voice vote.
The board and PEAK representatives said they hope to present candidate works and gather public input during PEAK’s 25th-anniversary events around Earth Day, while noting that installation could take longer than procurement and that safety and maintenance sign-offs will be required.
Next steps specified at the meeting: the PEAK working group will identify candidate pieces and locations; staff will draft the council report requesting approval up to the indicated amounts; and, if council approves, the board will use anniversary events and an online survey to collect public comment on the shortlisted pieces.
The board’s action covers procurement and near-term outreach only; no final purchase or installation contract had been signed by the end of the meeting.
