Albany City School District leaders reported progress on culturally responsive education (CRE) and equity work and described plans to deepen and scale the work in 2025-26 through a three-pronged approach.
The district's presentation said current work includes long-running CRE cohorts, school-based equity leadership teams, and student equity teams that co-lead activities. Partners from NYU Steinhardt are co-facilitating training, and district staff are building internal capacity to sustain the work.
Next year's plan calls for training 50 lead learners and running two CRE cohorts of 25 participants each; administrators will receive three full-day sessions focused on implementing CRE strategies at the building level. The district plans to co-facilitate sessions with NYU to pair modeling and coaching with on-site feedback.
Why it matters: Presenters told the board the goal is systemwide coherence so CRE is not a standalone initiative. The district will use a self-assessment walkthrough tool, ongoing coaching, and formal progress reviews to measure implementation. Leaders emphasized student voice, citing student equity teams that have led town halls, honor roll ceremonies and other activities.
Board members praised the approach and urged continued focus on measuring outcomes and retaining trained staff. Trustee comments ranged from reinforcing the importance of the work amid national debates to asking how the district will sustain gains despite turnover. The administration said the work is ongoing and will be embedded into superintendent's administrative days and building-level practice.
Ending: The district scheduled another equity summit for March and plans technical assistance and coaching to support building equity leadership teams going forward.
