Cumberland athletes honored: DeFusco sets state meet mark; middle‑school champion and fundraiser recognized

The Cumberland School Committee on Feb. 27 recognized several recent athletic achievements and a community fundraising effort.
Athletic Director Crowley told the committee that North Cumberland track athlete Kylie DeFusco won two individual state titles at the state meet, setting a state meet record in the 1,500‑meter race with a reported time and improving her own school record in the 1,000‑meter run. Crowley noted DeFusco will continue competing in regional championships and intends to run collegiately at the College of Charleston.
The committee also recognized North McCourt Middle School wrestler Adrian Velasquez as a state champion at the 126‑pound weight class, documenting a series of wins including pins and a 10‑3 decision in the final.
In addition, Crowley reported that an event pitting the district’s two middle schools raised more than $4,000 for Tyler Pereira, a high‑school student battling illness; the funds were raised at a combined middle‑school game night and acknowledged as a community effort by staff and parent volunteers.
