Community School principal honored as Rhode Island Elementary Principal of the Year; student donates Feinstein Foundation gift

Principal Cheryl Bernardo Vaughn of Community School was recognized by the Cumberland School Committee on Feb. 27 as the 2025 Rhode Island Elementary Principal of the Year.
Superintendent Dimona introduced Vaughn and said the district values school leaders who are nominated by their own staff. Two teachers—identified in the meeting as Mrs. Friedland and Mrs. Hennessy—read letters praising Vaughn’s leadership, citing long tenure, implementation of initiatives and close relationships with staff and families. Mrs. Friedland opened by reading, “Cheryl Bernardo Vaughn is the 2025 Rhode Island Elementary Principal of the Year.”
Council President Kinch presented a proclamation on behalf of the town council and mayor’s office, noting Community School’s recognition and academic standing in the state. Principal Vaughn thanked staff, families and her own supporters and said, “This recognition is not mine alone… it’s a reflection of the work that belongs to each and every one of us.”
During the celebration the committee also announced a student recipient of a Feinstein Foundation golden ticket. Kindergarten student Ella Walker presented a $5,000 donation to Community School to benefit the art and music programs and a separate $500 check for the Hotel for Homeless Dogs; the student told school staff she loves pets and planned to deliver the check to the shelter.
