Torrance High School held its 15th annual track and field meet to honor Louie Zamperini, the World War II veteran and former Olympic distance runner, attendees said. Coaches, students and community members described Zamperini as a local icon whose resilience and character continue to inspire young athletes.
Coach Kyle Irvine said he had a personal connection to Zamperini and described him as a "wonderful human being" who "loved mankind," according to meeting remarks. Speakers recalled Zamperini's wartime survival after more than 40 days adrift in the Pacific and subsequent imprisonment during World War II, and noted his athletic achievements, including competing for the Olympics. Presenters said the stadium and the annual race are named for Zamperini and that the event features multiple track and field competitions, including an open 1,600-meter race, five relays and field events ranging from long jump to pole vault and discus.
Organizers and attendees highlighted the emotional and historical significance of the meet for Torrance High students and the broader community. One speaker encouraged learning more about Zamperini through the Torrance Historical Society and Museum, which was cited as open to the public on Wednesdays in Torrance.
