Phase 1 of Better Market Street reaches substantial completion, opens to bicyclists

Public Works Director Carla Short told the Public Works Commission that phase 1 of the Better Market Street Improvements has reached substantial completion as of Feb. 27. The upgrades include shorter pedestrian crossing distances, new street trees, more visible traffic signals, new curb ramps, street paving, reconstructed street base, decorative pavers and rebuilt sidewalks between Fifth and Eighth Streets.
Short said Public Works provided project management, design, construction management, regulatory affairs and public affairs services for the work. Under the long‑term plan, Better Market Street will eventually span more than two miles from Stuart to Octavia Streets, but construction of future phases is dependent on funding availability.
With the substantial completion of large‑scale construction in the phase 1 area, Short said the corridor is now ready to be fully opened to bicyclists. She added anecdotal public praise for the finished work: "oh my gosh. It looks so great," she relayed.
The commission thanked Public Works operations and contractor teams for minimizing pedestrian disruption during construction and for maintaining walkability along the corridor during the multi‑phase project.
