Brownsburg sets weekend Stevens Park pickleball hours to 10 a.m.–6 p.m. after neighbor complaints

The Town of Brownsburg Town Council on Feb. 27 voted to set weekend pickleball hours at Stevens Park to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays after receiving a report from Parks Director Amber Layton about a nearby resident’s noise concerns.
Amber Layton told the council she met with a resident living about 68 feet from the courts who asked the town to shorten weekend hours so neighbors could use their back patios without persistent pickleball noise. Layton said the resident requested hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday; staff expressed concern about a staggered Sunday start time and recommended consistent hours.
"They've asked for 10 to 6 on Saturday, 1 to 6 on Sunday. Staff is kind of iffy about that 1 time," Layton said. Council members discussed mitigation steps already taken, including planting trees, and noted that tree growth will take time to reduce sound. Council suggested future options such as adding courts farther from homes, indoor courts at the recreation center, or using school tennis complexes when not in session.
After discussion, the council agreed to set weekend hours at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for both Saturday and Sunday. A council member announced the decision: "We'll go ahead and move forward with a 10 to 6." The council asked staff to clearly post the updated hours and to notify neighbors. A staff comment during the meeting advised neighbors that if courts are occupied before 10 a.m. and creating a disturbance they may call the police.
Council members and staff also discussed future park planning as part of the town’s recreation and master-plan work, citing undeveloped parcels including Lincolnwood Park and a roughly 23-acre parcel behind MI Homes as possible sites for additional courts or amenities. Parks staff said they will investigate locations, placement relative to nearby homes, and whether indoor or multi-use courts might reduce neighborhood impacts.
The decision is administrative and does not require an ordinance; staff will implement the posting and neighbor notifications.
