District outlines no-cost certification pathway for non-degree educators in PLCP

Superintendent Doctor Burns briefed the board on the district’s Professional Learning Certification Program, or PLCP, which the district says provides a no-cost pathway for qualified non–education-degreed employees to earn teaching certification.
Doctor Burns told the board the program partners with NEFEC to deliver self-paced modules covering 20 competencies, pairs participants with paid mentor teachers, and is designed to address teacher shortages by allowing professionals from industry to transition into classroom roles. He said 30 individuals are currently enrolled and participating in modules and mentor-supported workshops.
The superintendent said the program’s model is intended to retain existing personnel by eliminating the out-of-pocket cost of certification for participants; one participant cited in the presentation estimated they would have paid about $5,000–$8,000 to certify outside the program. The district said mentors receive compensation and participants receive detailed feedback and network sessions on classroom management, higher-order thinking and data use.
Doctor Burns said the district will provide the board the full presentation, including individual participant comments collected during the rollout. Board members had no substantive policy objections during the presentation and acknowledged the program’s potential to broaden recruitment and retention.
Staff noted this is an active program across Nassau County and thanked staff members who helped launch it; no formal vote was required.
