The City Council adopted Ordinance 2025-008 to cancel all noncontested races scheduled for the May 3, 2025 municipal election and to declare each unopposed candidate elected to the office they sought.
During the discussion, a councilmember clarified that the charter commission election (referenda or charter amendments) will continue and appear on the May ballot; the ordinance only applied to those specific uncontested offices listed in the order.
The motion to adopt the ordinance passed on a unanimous voice vote. Council staff explained the ordinance includes customary findings and a severability clause and becomes effective as provided in the ordinance language.
The city clerk will take steps required under state election law to reflect the cancelled races and certify the unopposed candidates as elected as provided by the ordinance.
