Austin council approves West Creek redevelopment exception with environmental conditions and community directions

The Austin City Council approved item 24 on Feb. 27, granting a redevelopment exception for the West Creek Mixed Use project while directing staff and the applicant to implement several environmental, stormwater and community mitigations.

Council Member Paige Ellis moved the approval with a detailed set of directions that incorporated numerous Environmental Commission recommendations; the motion was seconded by Council Member Ryan Alter and the item was approved "without objection."

Why the decision matters

The property sits in the Barton Springs zone, a hydrologically sensitive area that feeds the Barton Springs aquifer and pool. Environmental advocates had urged the council to require a full Save Our Springs (SOS) non‑degradation pond, to reduce impervious cover and to adopt additional drainage and tree‑planting measures. Council's action adopted many of those requests in a form that remains framed as directives to the applicant and to staff rather than mandatory ordinance changes.
