Senate committee forwards Dr. Sophia George to full body for Virgin Islands hospital board

Dr. Sophia (Safia) George, president of the University of the Virgin Islands and a registered nurse with clinical and academic leadership experience, was favorably voted by the Senate Committee on Rules and Judiciary on Feb. 27 and will be forwarded to the full Legislature for consideration for the Virgin Islands Government Hospital and Health Facilities Corporation District Governing Board (St. Thomas–St. John).
In her submitted testimony, Dr. George outlined nearly 30 years of clinical, research and higher‑education work, including practice at U.S. academic medical centers and published research in public‑health topics. She told the committee she would focus on financial sustainability, quality metrics and strengthening ties between hospitals, public health and the university.
"Looking at the data and seeing how we can continue to improve those outcomes, improve any that are below where they need to be, and helping to identify ways where we can improve the financial sustainability of the hospitals and facilities," Dr. George said during her remarks.
The committee voted to forward her nomination. Senator Avery L. Lewis moved the motion to report the nomination favorably and Senator Kenneth L. Gittens seconded. The roll call returned six yes votes and one absent. The committee chair recorded that Dr. George's nomination "has been favorably voted upon in the committee on rules and judiciary and will be forwarded to the full body for further consideration and action."
