The University District Commission voted on Feb. 27 to conditionally approve three proposed wall signs for the Kroger store on North High Street, with the condition that the main sign on the north elevation be reduced to better fit the building facade.
Staff presented revised drawings submitted by the applicant showing alternate treatments for the main (north) elevation sign and two additional signs (including the pharmacy sign). Staff recommended conditional approval and asked the applicant to submit revised drawings reducing the main sign’s size so it better fits the building’s architectural proportions.
During discussion the applicant explained Kroger’s evolving brand and logo treatments and said the company preferred a raceway-mounted sign in this instance but could work within the commission’s conditional requirement. Commissioners noted the existing sign was on a raceway and that a like-for-like treatment with refreshed paint was an acceptable approach if the revised drawings were provided.
Motion and vote: A motion to approve the signage package with the condition that the main north-elevation Kroger sign be reduced in size and that revised drawings be submitted passed on a voice/roll-call vote. The motion was made by Mr. Mather and seconded; the roll call recorded votes in favor and the motion carried.
Ending: The commission approved the signage with the stated condition; the applicant will supply revised drawings reflecting the reduced-scale main sign for staff review and final sign-permit processing.
