The Board of Regents— Property and Facilities Committee recommended approval of the University of Northern Iowa—s schematic design, project description and $14 million budget for a 27,000-square-foot court practice facility.
Michael Hager, UNI project lead, told the committee the facility would be constructed immediately south of the McLeod Center to allow shared use of locker rooms and other support spaces and avoid duplication. The building will contain two full-size courts sized to allow multiple practice configurations, a small training room, strength and conditioning space, restrooms and storage. Hager said the facility is funded entirely with gifts to the UNI Foundation and estimated annual operating and routine maintenance costs at approximately $81,000 a year.
Hager said the court-practice facility is intended to address practice-space shortages for men—s and women—s basketball and women—s volleyball and to reduce practice time taken from student recreation facilities. UNI representatives said the new facility would support competitive programs and reduce strain on the McLeod Center.
Why it matters: The project provides sport-specific indoor practice space, which athletic staff said is needed to support team practice schedules and to protect general student recreation capacity.
Next steps: The committee recommended the item to the full Board of Regents on the consent agenda. If approved by the full board, UNI will proceed with design-bid-build procurement and schedule construction in coordination with other campus activities.
Provenance (excerpted): topic introduction: "The University of Northern Iowa is requesting approval of the schematic design, project description, and budget for our court practice facility." (Michael Hager). topic finish: "As you can see at the bottom of page 4, there are 2 courts in the facility that would hold full size basketball and full size volleyball." (Hager).
