Iowa State presents engineering, parking and lab renovations and two easements to regents

Iowa State University presented three capital-register requests and two institutional easements at the Iowa Board of Regents Property and Facilities Committee on Feb. 27. The committee recommended forwarding the items to the full board by general consent.
Sean Reeder, Iowa State capital-planning staff, described the requests: permission to proceed with planning to renovate approximately 12,000 square feet in Black Engineering Building to create research labs, offices and support space for mechanical engineering following the summer move of another department; a $2,700,000 pavement preservation and utility-adjacent repair project consisting of concrete reconstruction, sidewalk restoration, lighting and steam-tunnel and utility upsizing in central campus parking areas; and a $2,300,000 remodel of 2,400 square feet in the Human Nutrition Sciences building to relocate a textiles teaching lab displaced by demolition of LeBaron Hall. Reeder said the Black Engineering and textiles projects are expected to be funded largely by private giving; the pavement preservation project is funded from parking and utilities system funds.
Reeder also described two easements requested by Iowa State. One easement, south of Sixteenth Street, will permit the city of Ames and its contractors to relocate electrical distribution lines as part of a separate street widening project; the other easement at the State Avenue / U.S. Highway 30 intersection allows replacement of a guy pole and down wires that are part of the transmission system supplying university facilities.
Committee discussion focused on fund sources and project timing. Regent Hensley asked whether private fundraising commitments were in hand for projects described as gift-funded; Reeder said commitments and large portions of the funds were in hand and that he would confirm exact totals to the board.
Why it matters: These are typical campus infrastructure and programmatic renovations that support research capacity and maintenance of campus utilities and parking. The committee recommended approval by consent, and those recommendations were combined into the board—s consent agenda for full-board action.
