Councilmember Jose Velasquez presented a proclamation recognizing Jeanette Valdez Duran and her nonprofit Mobile Blessings from the Heart for efforts to combat food insecurity in East Austin.
Velasquez said Valdez has worked since 2015 to collect food donations from local retailers and the Austin Area Food Bank and to distribute fresh produce and other items to families each weekend. "What began as a small gesture of kindness has blossomed into a lifeline for hundreds of families," Velasquez said.
The proclamation said Valdez operates Mobile Blessings from the Heart out of her parents' property on Munson Street and credited the initiative with fostering dignity, community and empowerment for East Austin residents. Valdez accepted the proclamation and thanked God and the community for the opportunity to serve.
The recognition highlighted volunteer-driven relief work and civic partnership with the city; no city funding or formal program changes were announced at the ceremony.
