Austin declares Feb. 27, 2025 Cecile Richards Memorial Day; family members and council honor her advocacy

Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes read a proclamation declaring Feb. 27, 2025 as Cecile Richards Memorial Day and called Richards a "trailblazer" whose career included roles at Planned Parenthood, the Ford Foundation and other organizations.

Fuentes said Richards "dedicated her career to making our community stronger, safer, and more welcoming for everyone," and invited Richards' family and loved ones to speak.

A family member who identified themselves in remarks said Cecile Richards was a role model and described several episodes from her life, including campus activism at Brown University and organizing for workers' rights. The family speaker said, "I miss her terribly," and praised Richards' persistence and commitment to human rights.

Council members Jose Velasquez, Chito Vela and Mark Duchen were listed as presenting the proclamation alongside Fuentes. The proclamation summarized Richards' biography: born in Waco in 1957, raised in Dallas and Austin, active in labor organizing and progressive causes, and having served in national and philanthropic organizations. City officials framed the event as a memorial recognition; no policy or funding change was made at the ceremony.

Speakers emphasized Richards' lifetime of activism and urged the community to remember her example of sustained public engagement.
