Shawnee County commissioners approved a reclassification within the health department that converts a previously vacant registered nurse position in the maternal-child health program into a bilingual family health navigator position.
Theresa Fisher, director of the health department, said the registered nurse role had been vacant for multiple years and the division manager revised the job description after reviewing grant requirements, target populations and statewide counterparts. Fisher said she worked with audit/finance, human resources and Teamsters representatives, and that all parties supported the reclassification.
The new position carries an annual salary and benefits cost of $48,588.80, with 60% of the salary funded by Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) grant funds. Commissioners approved the personnel action by a 3-0 vote; Commissioner Aaron Mays moved for approval and Commissioner Kevin Cook seconded.
The health department will proceed with recruitment under the new classification and will bill grant funds per KDHE rules as the position is filled.
