Shawnee County to mill and overlay stretch of South Topeka Boulevard; work to occur under traffic

The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners authorized staff to solicit bids for milling and inlay (mill-and-overlay) on a long stretch of South Topeka Boulevard, covering both northbound and southbound travel lanes and to be performed under traffic.
Courtney House, director of public works, described the project as a substantial mill-and-inlay from about 1,400 feet south of SW 90th Street near the US-75 South Topeka interchange to the county line. "What we plan to do is one lane at a time and then have a work zone where we allow alternate directions of travel through the work zone," House said. She estimated the on-road milling and paving work would likely take "maybe a week, 10 days."
Commissioners voted 3-0 to authorize solicitation of bids. Commissioner Bill Rippon moved for approval; Commissioner Kevin Cook seconded. House said the county will bring in a third party to perform the milling because the county lacks space for all the millings.
The county emphasized it will not fully close the roadway and intends to keep alternating lanes open while work proceeds. The motion instructs staff to solicit competitive bids and return with contract recommendations after the procurement process.
