Courtney House, director of public works, told commissioners the county plans to advertise the project in early May and begin construction between mid-June and early August. "Total cost is around $860,000," House said. She said the existing structure has a "scour" risk and other problems that make replacement necessary.
The commissioners approved the request by voice vote, 3-0. Commissioner Kevin Cook moved for approval; Commissioner Bill Rippon seconded the motion.
The project will be funded using proceeds from the county's half-cent countywide retailer sales tax, which runs through 2031. House said the new bridge will be approximately 28 feet wide, similar to the existing span, and that design work is already complete.
Commission discussion focused on timing and readiness; there were no recorded objections. The county will solicit construction bids as authorized by the motion.
What happens next: Public bidding is expected to begin in May, followed by construction starting in summer 2025 pending bid results and contractor scheduling.
