Council begins reassigning board and committee seats, defers formal appointments

South Salt Lake City Council members reviewed representation on city boards and committees and discussed filling seats following the arrival of a new council member.
Council Chair Charlotte opened a discussion to ensure all boards and committees are covered after the recent addition of a new council member, DeWolf. Council members and staff reviewed current assignments and schedules; several members said they can continue serving on existing boards while others flagged scheduling conflicts for daytime meetings.
Ariel, a staff member, and councilors discussed the mosquito abatement district seat, which meets at 2 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. Council members noted that the late-afternoon or daytime meeting time could conflict with full-time jobs and that the seat may not be required to be held by a council member; staff said they will double-check the requirement. Council members suggested replacing an elected representative with a staff appointment for boards that meet during the day if code allows.
Council Chair Charlotte said some appointments “have to be made by you,” indicating formal appointment authority rests with the council. The council did not take formal votes at the work meeting; members said specific appointments will be brought forward on a future agenda for action.
The council also noted the arts council recently moved to evening hours and that some council members who previously did not serve are willing to take on arts-council duties now that evening meetings are possible.
