Committee hears multiple reappointments to Greater Tulsa Area African American Affairs Commission

The Tulsa Public Works Committee reviewed several reappointments to the Greater Tulsa Area African American Affairs Commission and heard brief remarks from each nominee. The nominees — Maybelle Wallace (term expiring May 1, 2028), Marquise Dennis (term expiring May 1, 2027) and Brian Humphrey (term expiring May 1, 2026) — told the committee about their local ties and priorities; the City Council is scheduled to vote on the reappointments at its March 5 meeting.

Maybelle Wallace, who said she has lived in Tulsa for 95 years and has served on the commission since its inception, described outreach efforts and a new monthly newsletter. “I really feel that my purpose for being here is to help the young people,” Wallace said, noting she brings a historical perspective to the commission. Committee members praised her longevity and civic involvement.

Marquise Dennis, who identified himself as founder and executive director of Birthright Living Legacy and described work on fatherhood and family support, said he serves as chair of the commission’s policy committee and described coordination with other local groups. “I am Marquise Dennis, founder and executive director of a organization called Birthright Living Legacy, fatherhood celebration and support,” he said.

Brian Humphrey, a commercial lender who said he was born and raised in Tulsa and serves on the Tulsa Planning Commission, described his interest in strengthening ties between the commission and economic development work.

Committee members thanked the nominees for their service and noted that the council would consider the reappointments at the March 5 meeting. Several members encouraged the commissioners to bring policy suggestions forward to the council when appropriate.

No formal committee votes or nominations were recorded; the reappointments will proceed to the full council for confirmation.
