Corey Nicollet, director of maintenance and grounds for the district, presented a recommendation to replace the Emporia High School boiler system. Nicollet said the board discussed the project about a year earlier in a facilities review; the district solicited three bids and recommended 5 Star Mechanical, a company that already performs control‑system work for the district. Nicollet said the recommended price for purchase and installation of three units is $350,799.
Nicollet described the configuration as three units that “would take turns being the primary unit,” and said the new installation will also heat the pool and require plumbing tie‑ins. Board members asked whether the new boilers included alerting or remote monitoring; Nicollet said the recommended contract adds sensors and a modern controls package that provides far more diagnostic visibility than the older system. He estimated the new boilers could provide about 20 years of service if well maintained and said the proposed models reach efficiencies up to 99 percent.
A board member moved to approve the 5 Star Mechanical bid for the Emporia High School boiler replacement. The motion was seconded, put to a hand vote and passed 6‑0.
Ending: The board approved the contract; Nicollet said additional secondary costs related to the overall high‑school project will be brought to the board for future approval as details and phasing are finalized.
