Several council members and residents urged that the town first obtain professional feasibility and cost assessments for renovating Taylor Pool and for comparing the Malibu site as an alternative.
Council Member Bell moved to rescind prior authorizations to demolish Taylor Pool until the town obtains an independent professional assessment of the pool's condition and a cost comparison between renovating the existing facility and constructing at an alternative site. Several council members supported the idea of a technical evaluation; one councilor noted that previous studies and schematic designs had produced a range of options and costs and that the council needs concrete, apples-to-apples comparisons rather than a new round of high-level consulting.
Public commenters and council members described the pool as a long-standing community asset and urged the council to consider renovating the existing facility if that proved cost-effective. Acting town manager Sheila said staff would not move forward on demolition in the immediate term and that demolition would be inefficient if a new facility had not been contracted; staff said any demolition would be dependent on future council direction and related funding.
