Marriott Slaterville completes 1200 West reconstruction with drainage, sidewalks and new signal

Shane Taggart, city engineer for Marriott Slaterville (Jones and Associates), presented the completed 1200 West reconstruction project to the Ogden Layton Area Technical Advisory Committee for Transcom on Feb. 26.
The project rebuilt a portion of 1200 West from roughly 400 North southward, adding a center median, widened shoulders for future bike lanes, curb and gutter, sidewalks on both sides and a traffic signal at 400 North and 1200 West. "The final project, was a was a huge success," Taggart said during the presentation.
Why it matters: 1200 West is a key north–south collector that carries traffic to the Weber County Fairgrounds and serves freight and local commuters. Taggart said the roadway saw frequent truck traffic tied to the BDO and seasonal peaks during fair events; the improvements aim to address safety, multimodal access and traffic capacity as growth continues.
What the presentation described: Taggart said the city originally secured $3,385,000 from the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and later exchanged federal funds for state funds to accelerate the construction schedule. The transcript contained inconsistent figures for later funding and final cost; those amounts were not specified precisely in the presentation.
Construction highlights provided by Taggart included installation of roughly 3,500 linear feet of storm drain in a 3-by-6-foot culvert that conveys to 4 Mile Creek; about 2,828 linear feet of sewer; about 3,000 linear feet of secondary water piping; roughly 6,300 tons of asphalt; about 43,000 square feet of concrete; and approximately 6,000 linear feet of curb and gutter. Taggart also noted an upgraded traffic signal at 400 North and 1200 West.
Taggart described a difficult construction phase because the road is old and crews found numerous unanticipated utilities and abandoned culverts under the pavement. The road was closed for much of construction and access was limited. He added that the meandering sidewalk on the BDO side was constrained by environmental conflicts and did not end up as curving as originally envisioned, but the sidewalk is lighted and in use.
Questions and next steps: No committee members asked questions during the presentation. Taggart said the city anticipates continuing to seek funding to widen 1200 West further south to Twelfth Street and looks forward to coordinating future work with the regional group.
