Mount Sinai board clears environmental review; turf fields, security upgrades set to proceed after state permits

The Mount Sinai Union Free School District Board of Education adopted a Type II determination under the State Environmental Quality Review (SEQRA) process on Feb. 4, 2025, clearing the way for capital improvements the superintendent said are fully permitted by the state and ready to begin.

Superintendent Dr. Crucione told the board, "big, big important news. Our capital project update from our approved capital project for May, dollars 3,000,000. We have excellent news that we've received our state approval and our permits for all the projects, which means we are going to get started." The superintendent said the district has shifted home baseball and softball games off-site so turf installation can begin and that LandTech has received purchase orders and will schedule mobilization.

The board’s formal action was a SEQRA Type II determination that classified the listed improvements as routine maintenance or replacement in kind and therefore not subject to an environmental impact statement, citing 6 NYCRR 617.5. The motion language recorded at the meeting described work including exterior wall and window replacement, crawl-space insulation and other improvements to a 10-classroom wing; the board resolved the project falls into SEQRA categories for maintenance and replacement and that no further environmental review is required.

The superintendent also outlined related security and communications work: the district is reviewing phone and door vendors, with the phone system potentially installed before the school year ends and door/security work scheduled for summer when buildings are empty. "We're in the process of choosing that, and that's gonna get started possibly earlier, the phone system, hopefully, before school ends. And this the doors and security would start over the summer because we need the buildings empty to be able to do that," Dr. Crucione said.
