During the public-comment period at the Feb. 26 Baldwin Park Planning Commission meeting, Anita Diaz, a member of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission, asked the Planning Commission to consider adopting or otherwise supporting transforming the Flanner School campus—on Baldwin Park's southeastern edge near Francesquito Avenue—into a public park.
"We need open spaces. We need parks. We need a place where children can go and play freely," Diaz said, urging the city to preserve the campus for community recreation. She described traffic and limited yards in the area and suggested the site's older buildings could be refurbished for community events and that green space would provide walking areas.
Planning staff later clarified that the school property is controlled by the Bassett Unified School District and that the district would make initial decisions about disposition of the site, including potential sale or repurposing; the city would receive any proposals for review through its land-use process if and when they are submitted.
No formal agenda item or application related to the Flanner School campus was before the commission at the Feb. 26 meeting; Diaz's remarks were taken during the verbal communications portion of the agenda.
