The Chandler Unified School District governing board voted Feb. 26 to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation to provide on‑campus eye exams and glasses for students.
Under the MOU the foundation will provide a doctor and perform eye exams at a site when at least 30 students at that location have parent or guardian consent; students identified as needing glasses will receive them free of charge. The district will provide classroom space for the program to operate, and staff said the foundation returns about four weeks later to fit and deliver glasses when required. The board motion passed unanimously.
In discussion, Board Member Heap asked whether any Chandler schools currently meet the 30‑student participation threshold; health and student services staff said the program operates in Mesa Unified and said district staff will contact sites and families once the MOU is in place. Board members described the program as a way to reduce barriers for families without easy access to eye care and said the district has used other on‑site health services (e.g., the Chandler Care Center) but that bringing an exam directly to campus can reach families who cannot travel.
