Kids Own Museum asks board to consider adding funding request after permit, cites rising costs

Carol Maher, director of Kids Own Museum, asked the Truckee Tahoe Airport District board during public comment to consider her organization's funding request after the museum received a town development permit and plans to move forward with construction.
Maher said the museum recently secured a development permit that clears the way for a building permit expected in June, and the project will be constructed in two phases because costs have increased since the original application.
“Phase 1 will be $9,000,000, and we've raised $6,000,000 to date,” Maher said. She described earlier cost estimates that began at $8 million for a 12,000‑square‑foot building and rose as material and design decisions changed; she said tariff‑related price increases also have contributed to higher costs. The museum plans an 18‑month construction schedule and estimates a 6,500‑square‑foot facility at Regional Park when complete.
Maher asked the board to “consider our project” in light of the changed financial picture and noted the nonprofit is positioned to break ground this spring if funding and approvals align. She asked whether the board would like the request added to a future agenda; board members said they could consider it during an upcoming strategic planning workshop and that staff could add it to a future meeting agenda if directors requested.
No formal motion or vote took place on the request at this meeting.
