Auburn winter teams notch regional titles, state qualifiers; unified basketball to host March 11 game

Todd Sampson, Auburn Public Schools athletic director, gave a winter sports update Feb. 26 highlighting several team and individual accomplishments across the district.
Sampson said alpine skiing produced a KVAC giant slalom champion (freshman Ellie Porter) who qualified for the Eastern high school championships in New Hampshire. The boys' alpine team won the KVAC Alpine championship and finished third overall in the state comeback day. Swim teams earned multiple school records: Sampson said the girls won the KVAC championship and the boys won their fourth consecutive KVAC title and were Class A runner-up.
In basketball, Sampson said the girls earned a spot at the Cross Insurance Arena and pointed to Rachel Penny setting her school's all-time record for three-pointers made; Penny is scheduled to play in the McDonald's All‑Star game in Bangor. The boys advanced to the regional final. Sampson said Ding May Wynne was named the tournament's most outstanding player (George Bridal award) despite not being on the championship team.
Sampson reported other highlights: cheer qualified for states for the first time in 10 years; Nordic skiing athletes received an MPA Class A sportsmanship award; two indoor track athletes qualified for New England competition at the Reggie Lewis Center; ice hockey finished the regular season third seed; wrestling placed three qualifiers for New England championships; and unified basketball remained undefeated at 4–0.
Sampson invited the public to the unified basketball home game on Tuesday, March 11, at 3:30 p.m. and thanked coaches and volunteers; he noted each KVAC championship program receives $500 to support championship gear. Several committee members praised coaches, notably Scott Morrison for contributions to the swimming program.
