Commission denies removal request for redwood at 22301 Wellington Avenue

The Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Commission on Feb. 26 denied a request to remove a redwood tree located within the front setback at 22301 Wellington Avenue.
Staff and the Street Tree Advisory Committee reported that the tree is a large, healthy specimen. The applicant had raised concerns about wildfire; staff described the site as low risk and said the applicant left the advisory committee meeting “relieved” by the discussion.
At the commission meeting, commissioners asked whether the property owner lived on site and whether insurance had been dropped; staff reported no evidence that the owner’s insurance had been canceled. No public commenters spoke against the staff recommendation.
Commissioner Nielsen moved to accept the Street Tree Advisory Committee recommendation to deny removal; Commissioner Price seconded. Commissioner Aldana asked for the denial to be recorded “without prejudice” to allow future review if circumstances change; the amendment was accepted and the motion passed.
