Library board approves January minutes; director announces Sunday hours, tech and facility updates

Library Director Sheila reported that, at the City Council’s midyear budget meeting, council accepted a budget request that restores limited Sunday hours at the Dove and Cole branches. Director Sheila said the approved change will add Sunday openings from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at those two locations but does not fund staffing for the Schulman Auditorium nor additional programs in the Golin (Golan) space. “We are very excited,” Sheila said, noting staff will work through operational details before the new hours begin.
Sheila also described several operational initiatives: a six-month pilot to test two interior guest-traffic and facility-usage analytics systems in partnership with the city’s parks and recreation department; a 12–18 month procurement process to replace end-of-life radio-frequency identification (RFID) equipment that supports self-check kiosks and the automated materials handler; and completion of a patron-printer replacement project, which deployed new equipment to all library locations and parks-and-rec offices on Jan. 30.
Staff said the Schulman Auditorium renovation is nearing completion and that staff are training on new audiovisual technology; a reopening event is being planned. Principal librarian Laura Mendez will serve as a judge at the San Diego County Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 6, representing the library.
There were no public speakers on these items and trustees offered no questions after the director’s report. The meeting was adjourned at 4:48 p.m.
