Residents press county for transparency on Vulcan quarry closure; commissioners say annual meeting being scheduled

A Placitas resident raised questions about limited attendance and notice for meetings concerning the Vulcan quarry closure during the Sandoval County commission's Feb. 26 public comment period.
Resident Lance Voss said he lives about 200 yards from the quarry and criticized what he described as isolated meetings with limited notification. "Why are meetings like this kept very isolated, limited attendance, no notification, and relatively in secret?" Voss asked, noting an annual meeting with Vulcan and the Eastern Sandoval Citizens Association has not yet been scheduled.
Commissioners and county staff responded during the commissioners' discussion. The county manager said staff is arranging the annual meeting among parties to the settlement agreement and that such meetings historically occur in spring; Commissioner Brook said meetings had been delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic but confirmed reclamation is a priority and the county is reviewing obligations under the settlement. "We are working on that now," the county manager said.
No new action or vote was taken at the meeting. Officials said they would coordinate scheduling with the parties to the settlement agreement and that the annual meeting may take place on-site or in the commission chambers. Commissioners asked staff to confirm the meeting timeline and report back to the board.
