Committee approves bill to modernize Office of Information Technology, add cybersecurity duties

The State Government Committee approved HB207, sponsored by Representative Shaw, to update the statutory authority and duties of the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and to add an explicit cybersecurity mandate.
Representative Shaw said OIT was created in 2013 and that a 2017 update expanded its role; HB207 would modernize the office’s statutory language, add cybersecurity and related definitions, remove references to defunct departments and create a Technology Quality Assurance Board to coordinate across state agencies.
Representative Shaw offered an amendment to clarify that municipalities and their instrumentalities are to be explicitly referenced in the bill text; the amendment was adopted by voice vote. Committee members asked for discussion but deferred detailed technical questions; Randy Wood seconded the motion to report the bill. The committee approved the bill as amended by voice vote.
Representative Shaw said passage of HB207 rendered a companion bill unnecessary; the committee agreed and passed HB207 as amended.
