Lifeguards report busy quarter: no drownings, rescues and training plans outlined

Lifeguard Services briefed the San Clemente Public Safety Committee on Feb. 25 on beach safety, staffing and training, reporting no drownings for the reported period and listing multiple rescues and preventative actions.
Staff reported attendance at beach facilities just under 900,000 visitors for the reporting period and nearly 1,000 incidents requiring lifeguard involvement. Lifeguards reported three swimmer rescues, 123 prevented assists, 485 public-deck contacts and 13 medical incidents (including one advanced-life-support call). The service also reported reuniting a lost child with family during the period and described a recent helicopter-assisted swift-water rescue.
Lifeguard staff said tower-construction work continues; two of the first three towers are scheduled for completion by April 1. Staff outlined upcoming training: a rookie training academy that runs on consecutive weekends in March and junior-guard swim tests scheduled on Sundays and Wednesdays beginning in March.
Staff said seasonal business hours will change March 9 from the current schedule to 8 a.m.–8 p.m. The committee asked several procedural and program questions about training and programming; staff answered and noted the city’s public-safety partners had been recognized at a recent ribbon-cutting and community events.
No committee action was taken on lifeguard items at the meeting.
