The State and Local Government Committee voted to advance an amended House Bill 8-23 that would permit sales of wine and spirits at certain new baseball stadiums, with an amendment addressing neighborhood policing concerns.
Chairman Lafferty, sponsor of the bill, said the measure is intended to allow the new venues in Knoxville and Chattanooga to sell wine and spirits. "The purpose of this bill is to make it possible for those new venues to sell wine and spirits," Lafferty said. He said an amendment was added after concerns from Chattanooga to "help kind of monitor the policing efforts down there" and to track any changes in crime.
The committee placed amendment 3834 on the bill by voice vote, then voted 19 ayes, 0 noes and 2 present nonvoting to move the amended bill to Finance, Ways and Means.
The sponsor said the amendment was aimed at allaying neighborhood concerns about crime; the bill as amended proceeds to the next committee for fiscal review.
