The tree board liaison said the city has removed Bradford pear trees proactively on Farmington and has begun replanting work, including new trees in front of C. L. Franklin. Jared Woodruff, identified in the meeting as the city's Natural Resource Manager, is coordinating mitigation and replanting, the liaison said. The tree board also announced two volunteer events: a tree-bundling session at Bobby Lanier Farm Park on March 5 from 9 a.m. to noon and an Arbor Day tree giveaway for Germantown residents on March 7 in front of Huey's.
The public-art liaison reported that a proposed mural on the south side of Southern Social did not move forward after discussions with the building owner and lessee. The art commission and staff are considering a portable mural or welcome panels to be used at community events such as the Germantown Festival instead. The liaison said the commission would continue to work through design and public-engagement questions, including whether the options would be subject to a public vote.
The streetscape task force liaison said the task force meets the night after the DRC meeting to discuss a pilot project focused on areas with the most damage to oak trees. The pilot is intended to develop a case study of design fixes to protect high-value oaks; the liaison said the task force will identify candidate locations and connectivity to determine where to begin a pilot.
Other liaison notes: the historic commission did not meet since the last DRC meeting; a report will be presented next time the commission meets. Alderman Hicks noted the Board of Mayor and Aldermen is entering budget season and praised the Design Review Commission's work.
