The City Commission of the City of North Lauderdale voted on Feb. 25 to approve a signed‑waiver request allowing Festival Supermarket to place larger lettering on its north‑facing façade at 7208 Southgate Boulevard.
Under Section 94‑16(c)(2)(c) of the City's sign code, maximum letter height is 16 inches; the approved waiver allows ‘‘Festival’’ lettering at 48 inches and ‘‘Supermarket’’ at 36 inches on the north elevation. Community Development Director Tanya Davis Hernandez told the commission the store is about 108 feet from Southgate Boulevard and that larger signage would help the business’s visibility.
The commission opened the item as a quasi‑judicial matter, heard no public opposition, and approved the waiver by roll‑call vote. The clerk recorded the following commissioners voting in favor: Commissioner Bustamante, Commissioner Lewis, Commissioner Dr. Martin, Vice Mayor Louis Ricketts and Mayor Samson Borja. No commissioner voted against the waiver.
The approval is limited to the specified elevations and letter heights described in the resolution and does not amend the underlying code. The applicant, representing the new owner of the Presidential Plaza storefront previously occupied by a different supermarket brand, said a temporary banner carrying the new name is currently in place.
