V&T Commission votes unanimously to support AB 32 study of commission structure and finances

The Nevada Commission for the Reconstruction of the V&T Railway voted unanimously to provide a declaration of support for Assembly Bill 32, a 2025 legislative measure requesting that the Assembly’s interim Committee on Growth and Infrastructure conduct a study of the V&T Commission’s structure, duties, powers and long-term financial viability.

Chair Peterson opened the discussion by noting copies of the bill were available in the meeting room. A staff summary provided to commissioners described the proposed interim study as an opportunity to evaluate whether the V&T Commission should be reorganized, terminated or directed to take steps to improve long-term viability. The summary noted the Carson City sponsor and that Story County had previously indicated support.

The bill had already received an initial committee hearing in the Assembly; staff said the committee asked whether the commission, Story County or Carson City would participate in the study because committee staff resources might be limited. If the bill advances it would need to be passed out of the Assembly committee, then both chambers and, if approved by both houses, be sent to the governor for signature.

Public commenters urged continued community involvement. Jim Faggart, who said he has worked on the reconstruction project since the early 1990s, offered to meet with commissioners and provide historical and operational context. Denny French (Carson City) emphasized the railroad’s tourism and historical value and urged public participation in any study.

Commissioner Stephanie moved to provide a declaration of support for AB 32 in its current form; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

The motion does not itself change commission duties or structure; rather, it signals the commission’s formal support for a legislative study that could recommend structural or financial changes in the future.
