Head of UN peace operations to visit DRC as mission reviews deployments; MINUSCA opens temporary base in Mingala

The United Nations said Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix will travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to engage with Congolese authorities and international partners and to review the implementation of Security Council resolution 2773.
The spokesperson said Lacroix will visit Beni in North Kivu to meet provincial authorities and the newly appointed force commander, Lieutenant General Ulis de Mesquita Gomez, inspect peacekeeping positions and assess recent developments. On March 1 he will travel to Entebbe, Uganda, to visit MONUSCO personnel who were evacuated from Goma following the advance of the M23, the spokesperson said.
Separately, the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic, MINUSCA, established a temporary operating base in Mingala in Basse-Kotto prefecture where civilians have faced threats from armed groups. The mission said peacekeepers are engaging with local authorities and residents to assess security and provide a response as part of its mandate to protect civilians.
The spokesperson also noted that UN Police Week is taking place this week, bringing together UN police leaders from several missions to discuss policing priorities including data-driven approaches, gender-responsive policing and interoperability with military and civilian components.
