Community league raises alarm over spike in district facility fees; policy committee to review

Jason Neal, a Feasterville resident representing LSAA flag football, told the Neshaminy School District Board of Directors that a community youth football league faces a sudden increase in facility-rental fees that could force the league to fold.
"I make $0 running this flag football league. Nothing goes into my pocket," Neal said. He said the league has used district fields behind a middle school for 25 seasons at no cost previously but recently received notice that rates will be $50 to $75 per hour for fields and that gym rental fees that had been as low as about $8 per hour were increased to $225 per hour.
Superintendent David Bowman (speaking during the meeting) said facility-usage fee policy is set through the district's policy committee and that the committee will discuss fees at its March 20 meeting. Bowman offered to meet with Neal after the meeting or by phone to follow up and said the district would review LSAA's usage given the group's nonprofit status.
The board did not take formal action during the public-comment period. Board members and district staff directed the matter to the policy committee for further review and possible adjustment of fee structures for nonprofit organizations.
District staff did not provide a written fee schedule or a line-item justification for the new rates during the meeting; Neal said he had nearly 200 families registered for the season and needed an answer about affordability.
