South Gate council denies damage claim in closed session; hears update on potential litigation

The South Gate City Council, meeting Feb. 25, reported after closed session that it had voted 5-0 to deny a claim filed by Yesenia Garcia Godinez arising from a traffic collision.
City Attorney Salinas reported that the Huntington Park Police Department had concluded Ms. Godinez was at fault in the accident; Ms. Godinez nevertheless filed a claim against the City of South Gate. The council’s motion to deny the claim was made by Councilmember Avalos, seconded by Mayor Davila, and carried on a 5-0 vote.
The council also discussed one potential case of anticipated litigation. According to the city attorney’s report, the city manager and city attorney presented information in closed session and the council took no action at that time.
City Attorney Salinas read the statutory bases for the closed-session items at the start of the meeting (Government Code §54956.9 and related sections). No further public comment was taken on the two closed-session items when the council returned to open session.
