Neighbors urge Manhattan CB2 to reject Gospel nightclub roadway cafe amid noise, traffic and safety concerns

Neighbors and residents sharply criticized a proposal to install a roadway dining structure in front of Gospel, a late‑night lounge at 281 Lafayette Street, during Manhattan Community Board 2’s outdoor dining working group meeting on Feb. 25.

Multiple residents said the venue’s late‑night operations combined with a roadway cafe would worsen noise, block vehicle circulation and pose safety risks for emergency vehicles. They urged the board to recommend denial of the applicant’s roadway‑cafe request or require changes that would remove any nighttime use of the outdoor space.

Why it mattered: Public testimony and the board’s discussion focused on nighttime public safety and quality‑of‑life tradeoffs. Several speakers said the proposed dining structure was being used in practice as a spillover area for club patrons at hours when alcohol service is governed by State Liquor Authority (SLA) stipulations. Neighbors said idling taxis and patrons standing in the street routinely block Lafayette, sometimes delaying emergency apparatus.
