Committee approves amendment restricting data collection in Senate Bill 285 and recommits bill to appropriations

The Senate Education and Career Development Committee accepted an amendment to Senate Bill 285 that narrows the bill’s data-collection requirements and adds flexibility where some data points may be unavailable. The committee then voted to pass the bill as amended and recommit it to the Appropriations Committee by a recorded vote of 12–1.
Senator Spencer Deary, who offered the amendment, told the committee the change refocuses the bill “on what we really care most about, Hoosier students,” and removes items that would otherwise require “a whole new bureaucracy.” ‘‘It also adds a little flexibility if the data point is truly unavailable,’’ Deary said.
Senator Gary Burn, the bill sponsor, voiced support for the amendment during the committee discussion. After the amendment was accepted by consent, a motion carried to pass the bill as amended and recommit it to Appropriations.
A roll call recorded the votes. Senator JD Ford voted yes; Senator Fadi Kadura voted yes; Senator Shelley Yoder voted aye; Senator Andrea Hunley voted no; Senator Brian Buchanan voted aye; Senator Stacy Donato voted aye; Senator Tyler Johnson voted yes; Senator Spencer Deary voted aye; Senator Gary Byrne voted aye; Senator Linda Rogers voted yes; Senator Darryl Schmidt voted aye; Senator Greg Goode voted aye; Senator Rotz voted aye. The tally announced was 12 to 1 in favor.
The committee chair said the bill will proceed to appropriations and work will continue outside the committee as needed.
Ending: Committee members indicated the bill will be taken up in appropriations next week, and sponsors and stakeholders will continue drafting and technical work prior to that consideration.
