Board presses staff on stormwater plan amendments and faster engineering reporting for drainage projects

Grand Island Town Board members discussed two infrastructure items: amending the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan to involve additional town departments, and improving reporting and tracking from the engineering division to speed drainage projects and manage grant deadlines.
A board member said crews in water, highway and other departments are "boots on the ground" who encounter problems during routine work, and training those staff to report issues would improve the town's pollution prevention efforts. The board asked staff to amend the stormwater plan to include these departments so routine observations feed into prevention and compliance efforts.
Separately, trustees expressed frustration with the pace of work on a drainage project that had been expected to be out to bid earlier in the year. Members asked for monthly or regular engineering reports listing active projects, percent complete and anticipated timelines. Staff said new tracking features — including a case-number system and a shared file or SharePoint view — will make it easier to see project status, and that new engineering hires should help complete CAD and other project tasks.
Trustees said grant deadlines and the splash pad project require prioritization so work starts on time. The board directed staff to make drainage project bidding a top priority and to provide regular status reports to the board.
