Superintendent outlines HR priorities, professional development and snow-day calendar next steps

Superintendent Dr. Hauswald presented the required human resources leadership update at the board meeting, describing the district's work on recruitment, induction, development, evaluation and retention of staff and the systems used to support those goals.
Dr. Hauswald said the district is working to build distributed leadership and two-way communication with principals, to improve systems for hiring and mentoring, and to develop succession plans for key roles. He described outreach efforts at recent career fairs and staff professional development sessions that included food service and instructional paraprofessionals. He said the district supports "grow your own" career pathways so paraprofessionals and other staff can advance into certified roles and noted that such internal pipelines can improve retention.
On evaluation, Dr. Hauswald said the district is reviewing processes to ensure evaluations are fair, equitable and used to improve performance; he also noted that evaluation metrics are often required components of federal grants. He closed the presentation after providing examples of professional development content used in recent make-up or staff days, including positive behavior supports and family educational rights and privacy act (FERPA) compliance training.
Calendar and weather-related impacts: Several speakers noted heavy snow and ice over the winter break. The district said it is reviewing minutes and guidance from the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to determine how many days must be made up; at the time of the meeting the administration expected to present an updated calendar within the next four to six weeks. The superintendent said the district typically uses three built-in snow days before moving to NTI (non-traditional instruction) and that the final approach will depend on the number of days that must be made up and KDE guidance.
Student representative Wyatt Levi reported the student SSAC meeting for January was canceled because of snow; he said the student mental health committee continues planning and will participate in an upcoming mental health summit.
Dr. Hauswald and the board thanked staff who worked to clear facilities and keep buildings safe during the weather event.
